Philosophy of Teaching

Piano Dreams Studio of Music is dedicated to helping people enrich their lives through the discovery of music.  Every effort is made to discover and nurture the natural talents and abilities of each student. Instruction is done in such a manner as to build upon the natural joy that comes with the discovery and playing of music, so that lessons will not be tedious and boring.  And lessons are taught with patience and humor to even further enrich the learning process.  The goal of Piano Dreams Studio of Music is to give every student the tools to achieve their musical dreams, whether those dreams are simply to enhance their enjoyment of music or to become a professional pianist.

The Basics and More

Piano Dreams teaches the basics:

  • Understanding of music notation

  • Development of strength and flexibility of the fingers

Piano Dreams also teaches:

  • A familiarity with the lives of the composers who composed the music

  • Understanding of music theory, including intervals, melody, harmony, etc.

  • The techniques of musical composition, including imitation, sequencing, inversion, etc.

  • Exposure to different genres of music, including jazz, ragtime, popular, etc., as desired

  •  The ability to play music by ear is fostered through ear training and practice

  • How to compose and/or arrange music for piano and/or orchestra

Repertoire

Piano Dreams Studio of Music draws from an extensive database of music to carefully select music that will inspire and motivate students and that will assist students in developing concepts of musicality and keyboard technique.  As students learn to play music of the great masters, they learn about the lives of the composers.

Students also have the opportunity to learn to play popular, jazz, and others styles of music.  Piano Dreams Studio creates customized arrangements to make it possible for students to play their favorite pieces, whether they be the latest songs on the pop charts or easier arrangements of famous classical repertoire.

Performance Opportunities

Students learn to experience the joy of performing before others, both in small venues of 5-8 students, and in larger recitals, and students receive trophies for their participation.  While participation in one or both of these venues is encouraged, it is not required. Students who so desire will be given opportunities to participate in competitions in piano performance and/or music composition, both at local and national levels.

Extras

Piano Dreams Studio of Music offers certain extras that are not offered by other studios:

Benefits of Music Study

Many parents who have not had the benefit of music study in their own lives may not be aware of the importance of music study in their child’s life.  Some of the many benefits of music study are as follows:

  • Inner Beauty - Music touches the soul in a way that nothing else can.  A child’s learning to reach deep within his/herself to find and nourish that inner beauty and to express it through music is priceless and life changing.
  • Confidence -  When a child  can do something very special that few others can do, this results in a quiet confidence that carries over to every other aspect of  life.
  • Social Development - The ability to play music can increase a child's popularity and win friends among his/her peers.
  • Concentration - The master of playing music requires focus and concentration; therefore the study of music helps to foster these qualities.
  • Patience - The mastery of some compositions and techniques requires patience, and students develop this patience in learning to play their favorite music.
  • Enhanced Learning Skills - It has been scientifically documented that children who learn to play music, and particularly piano, perform better in other school subjects.  This is due not only to the development of concentration skills and study habits, but also to the nature of the type of brain activity that is stimulated through the study of music.
  • Fun - Words can simply not describe how much fun it is to play a beautiful selection of music, especially when one plays for others.
